No matter how carefully you prepare, it doesn't matter whether you hire a professional or 'do it yourself', moving day is going to be stressful. Use the following Moving Day Checklist to make your move as stress free and efficiently as possible.
1. Arrange for the transport of your household belongings.
2. Notify friends, family and utility companies of the date of your move and your new address.
3. Hire a moving company or rent a truck.
4. Arrange for transport of items that require special attention (pianos, plants, pets etc).
5. Inventory the contents of your home; dispose of items no longer needed.
6. If appliances are remaining with the house, ensure manuals are left for the new owners.
7. Dispose of hazardous materials (gasoline, paint, thinners)
8. Keep items you may need immediately after the move (medications, facial tissues, coffee maker, coffee, tea, sugar etc.) and pack in a box labeled "Open First".
LAST MINUTE THINGS:
Read Meters if necessary
Turn furnace or air conditioning off or down
Turn lights off
Lock windows and doors
Arrange to drop keys off, bring them to closing, or have your REALTOR® pick them up at a designated location.
Ensure you obtain the keys for your new home.
IF YOU DO HIRE A MOVER TO PACK FOR YOU:
Make sure your house if free of clutter.
Designate anything you wish to leave for charity and separate out from the rest of your possessions.
Separate items you are uncomfortable having someone else pack, such as jewelry, momentos and personal or legal documents.
Keep small children properly occupied on the day the packers arrive. Having them underfoot just slows things down.
If you have questions, or for more information, consult a moving professional.
